Italy’s 5x1000 lets taxpayers direct a small share of their income tax to an eligible organization. It is not an extra payment and it is not the same as making a donation: the choice tells the Italian state where to allocate part of tax already due.
How the choice works
In the relevant section of your Italian tax return, sign the box corresponding to the beneficiary category and enter the organization’s tax code. A signature without a tax code still allocates the money, but it is divided among organizations in that category rather than assigned to one named beneficiary.
Check the tax code before signing
Similar names are common, while the tax code uniquely identifies the recipient. Copy it from the organization’s official website and compare it with the current lists published by the Italian Revenue Agency. Do not rely on an old poster, an unverified social post or memory.

Who can receive the 5x1000
Eligibility depends on the category and on annual accreditation rules. Third Sector Entities, research bodies, municipalities and other eligible subjects may appear in separate lists. RUNTS registration alone should not be treated as proof that an organization appears in the relevant 5x1000 list for a particular year.
After your choice
Payments are not immediate. Organizations normally receive funds after administrative checks and must follow the applicable reporting rules. When comparing organizations, look for clear explanations of how previous 5x1000 proceeds were used.
